My best holidays ever:

I can still remember the pine essence in the air, the tree shadows playing with the morning sun. When we first arrived in Tres Morros, it was the nicest place I have ever stayed in. I was part of scout patrol of nearly 12 to 14 boys, where Gastón and Marcelo were our Patrol guiders plus a couple of grown-ups who were around time-to-time giving a helping hand with the daily chores when camping out.

Tres Morros is located by the coast near Coliumo, which is a tiny fishing community close to Tomé in the 8th region, in the southern part of Chile. We spent two weeks there. I remember going fishing in the morning, hunting some days in the afternoon. Playing hide-and-seek at dusk, collecting sea shells and constructing a trail towards the camping site. We also helped the owner refurbishing the campsite by digging and installing a new water pipe extension  and rebuilding and painting the latrines.

There were days we cooked bread right into the wood ashes. The locals called this ‘tortillas de rescaldo’. My friend Marcos and  I had to oversaw the water supply for our camping spot as a daily task. We also had to carry water into the kitchen for the daily cooking. We had two 50 liters tanks which we had to refill at least twice a day! Some days, we went sailing, we also did some rowing. We also went to the local fish market to get some seafood for lunch. By night, we used to tell scary tales and present some funny plays. I similarly remember having a big fire at the centre of the camping site where everything took place (games, plays performances, etc.). Some nights Gastón had his guitar along and sang us some camping songs and a few ‘tonadas’.

I cannot forget my time with the boys in Tres Morros. Unfortunately, on those days, having a camera wasn’t that easy, so I haven’t got any photographs that would help to recall some of the faces that have started to fade away as years pass by.

  5. I think that the best part of a camp is when everyone sings in front of the big fire. I was never part of scout patrol myself, but with my family we used to camp out. :)

  7. While I reading your the story, it was impossible not to remember my time as a scout. It made me a little nostalgic to remember how much fun I had at all the camping, trail hiking, campfires, etc. what good times were.
